Steroid 21-monooxygenase

Term · Chemistry · MLC-T-CHM-011402

An enzyme, also known as 21-hydroxylase, that catalyzes the hydroxylation of steroids at the C-21 position. This reaction is a step in the biosynthesis of mineralocorticoids and glucocorticoids, such as aldosterone and cortisol, from progesterone and 17-hydroxyprogesterone. Deficiencies in this enzyme lead to congenital adrenal hyperplasia.
