Steroid

Term · Chemistry · MLC-T-CHM-011401

  1. A compound built on the four-ring steroid nucleus, a gonane skeleton in which three six-membered rings are fused to one five-membered ring, usually with angular methyl groups on C-10 and C-13. In biosynthesis they derive from triterpenoid precursors, with cholesterol serving as the precursor of animal steroid hormones and bile acids. The ring system has 17 carbons, and the class includes cholesterol, testosterone, estradiol, and cortisol.

  2. A class of organic compounds characterized by a specific carbon skeleton composed of four fused rings: three six-membered cyclohexane rings and one five-membered cyclopentane ring. These compounds are biologically active and include hormones like testosterone and estrogen, as well as cholesterol. They are derived biosynthetically from triterpenoids.
