Androstenedione
Term · Chemistry · MLC-T-CHM-000578
A steroid with 19 carbon atoms, secreted by the adrenal cortex and the gonads, that serves as an intermediate in the synthesis of steroid hormones. Enzymes convert it into the more potent hormones testosterone and estrone, the latter being a precursor of estradiol, and clinicians measure its level in blood to evaluate adrenal or gonadal function. Its systematic name is androst-4-ene-3,17-dione.
