Cortex

The outer layer of an organ or other anatomical structure, distinct from the inner medulla. In the context of toxicology, this includes the adrenal cortex, which produces steroid hormones, and the cerebral cortex, the outer layer of the cerebrum involved in higher cognitive functions. The renal cortex is the outer portion of the kidney containing the glomeruli and convoluted tubules.
