Medulla

The innermost part of an organ or structure, often distinct in function or composition from its outer cortex. In biology, examples include the adrenal medulla, which produces hormones like adrenaline, and the renal medulla, involved in urine concentration. The medulla oblongata is a part of the brainstem that controls involuntary functions.
