Foramen magnum

The large oval opening in the occipital bone at the base of the skull where the brainstem, specifically the medulla oblongata, continues into the spinal cord. Besides the cord and its membranes, it transmits the vertebral arteries and the spinal part of the accessory nerve. Its name is Latin for great hole.
