Foramen ovale
Term · Chemistry · MLC-T-CHM-004587
A temporary, oval-shaped opening in the interatrial septum of the fetal heart, allowing blood to bypass the pulmonary circulation and flow directly from the right atrium to the left atrium. This shunt closes shortly after birth, typically within the first few days or weeks, as pulmonary circulation becomes established. A patent foramen ovale can persist into adulthood.
