Ductus arteriosis

Term · Chemistry · MLC-T-CHM-003473

A short vessel in the fetal circulation that carries blood from the pulmonary artery to the descending aorta, so most of the blood leaving the right ventricle skips the unexpanded lungs. It normally constricts within hours or days after birth and becomes the ligamentum arteriosum. If it stays open, the result is a patent ductus arteriosus, a congenital heart defect.
