Ligamentum arteriosum

Term · Chemistry · MLC-T-CHM-006566

A small, fibrous remnant of the ductus arteriosus, a fetal blood vessel that shunts blood from the pulmonary artery to the aorta, bypassing the lungs. After birth, as the lungs become functional, the ductus arteriosus typically closes and degenerates into this non-functional ligament. It connects the aortic arch to the pulmonary artery.
