Fossa ovalis

Term · Chemistry · MLC-T-CHM-004610

A depression in the interatrial septum of the right atrium of the heart, marking the location of the foramen ovale from the fetal stage. Before birth, the foramen ovale allows oxygenated blood from the placenta to bypass the non-functional fetal lungs by shunting it from the right to the left atrium. After birth, a tissue flap closes this opening, and its remnant forms the fossa ovalis, a distinct anatomical feature of the adult heart.
