The developing offspring in viviparous animals, including humans, from the completion of embryonic development until birth. In humans, this stage begins approximately nine weeks after fertilization and continues until delivery, characterized by rapid growth and maturation of organs and systems. During this period, the organism is highly susceptible to environmental factors and chemical exposures.
