Embryonic period

Term · Chemistry · MLC-T-CHM-003840

The stage of prenatal development that begins after fertilization and implantation and extends until the major structures and organ systems are formed. This period is characterized by rapid cell division, differentiation, and morphogenesis, making the embryo highly susceptible to teratogenic agents. In humans, the embryonic period lasts from implantation until the end of the eighth week after fertilization, after which the fetal period begins.
