Gestation period

The duration of time from conception to birth in viviparous animals, during which the embryo or fetus develops within the mother's uterus. This period encompasses all stages of prenatal development, from fertilization of the egg to the complete formation of a viable offspring. The length of gestation varies considerably among different species, ranging from a few weeks in some rodents to over 20 months in elephants.
