Lactation period

The duration following parturition during which a female mammal produces and secretes milk from the mammary glands to nourish her offspring. This physiological process is regulated by hormones such as prolactin and oxytocin. The length of the lactation period differs significantly among species, ranging from a few weeks in some rodents to several years in certain primates.
