Prolactin

Term · Chemistry · MLC-T-CHM-009532

A peptide hormone synthesized and secreted by the anterior pituitary gland that primarily stimulates milk production (lactation) in mammals after childbirth. Its secretion is regulated by neuroendocrine mechanisms, including inhibition by dopamine from the hypothalamus. In addition to lactation, prolactin influences reproductive functions, metabolism, and the immune system, with over 300 separate biological activities identified.
