Ventriculo-atrial shunt
Term · Chemistry · MLC-T-CHM-012544
A surgically implanted tube used to treat hydrocephalus by diverting excess cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) from a cerebral ventricle to the right atrium of the heart. The device consists of a ventricular catheter, a one-way valve to regulate flow and pressure, and a distal catheter that empties into the bloodstream. This procedure relieves the elevated intracranial pressure that can result from exposure to neurotoxicants or from developmental abnormalities affecting CSF circulation.
