Hydrocephalus
Term · Chemistry · MLC-T-CHM-005460
A build-up of cerebrospinal fluid in the ventricles of the brain, raising pressure inside the skull and, in infants whose skull bones have not yet fused, enlarging the head. The fluid collects because its flow is blocked, its absorption is impaired or, more rarely, too much of it is produced. A ventriculoperitoneal shunt, which drains the excess fluid into the abdominal cavity, is the standard surgical treatment.
