Arteriovenous shunt

Term · Chemistry · MLC-T-CHM-000804

A route by which blood passes straight from an artery to a vein, skipping the capillary beds and so exchanging nothing with the tissues. It may be a normal physiological channel, such as an arteriolovenular anastomosis in the skin, or an abnormal or surgically created one, as in dialysis access. Blood routed this way delivers less oxygen to the tissue downstream.
