Arteriolovenular anastomosis

Term · Chemistry · MLC-T-CHM-012893

A direct vascular connection between an arteriole and a venule that allows blood to bypass the intervening capillary bed. These shunts are involved in regulating blood flow, blood pressure, and body temperature by diverting blood away from the capillaries directly into the venous circulation. Such connections are present in many tissues, including the skin of the extremities, the gastrointestinal tract, and the lungs, where they serve specific physiological functions.
