High endothelial venule

Term · Chemistry · MLC-T-CHM-005286

Specialized post-capillary venous swellings that function as gateways for lymphocytes to move from the blood into the lymphoid tissues. These venules are characterized by their plump, cuboidal endothelial cells, which express specific adhesion molecules that bind to receptors on circulating lymphocytes, facilitating their extravasation. High endothelial venules are primarily found in secondary lymphoid organs such as lymph nodes and Peyer's patches, but not in the spleen.
