Exposure surface

The area of an organism's body that is directly in contact with an external chemical agent or environmental factor. This surface can be external, such as skin or respiratory tract linings, or internal, like the gastrointestinal tract. The size and nature of the exposure surface significantly influence the rate and extent of absorption of a toxicant.
