Route of exposure

Term · Chemistry · MLC-T-CHM-010445

The pathway by which a chemical substance enters a biological system or comes into contact with a target organism. The primary routes for humans and other mammals are inhalation (breathing), ingestion (swallowing), and dermal contact (absorption through the skin). The specific route determines the rate and extent of absorption, the distribution of the substance within the body, and the resulting toxicological effects.
