Route of Exposure

Term · Environment · MLC-T-ENV-024568

1. The way a chemical enters an organism after contact (e.g., ingestion, inhalation, or dermal absorption).

2. The avenue by which a chemical comes into contact with an organism (e.g., inhalation, ingestion, dermal contact, injection).

3. The means by which toxic agents gain access to an organism such as ingestion, inhalation, dermal exposures; and intravenous, subcutaneous, intermuscular administrations.

4. Route: The way a chemical or pollutant enters an organism after contact, e.g., by ingestion, inhalation, or dermal absorption.

5. The way people come into contact with a hazardous substance. Three routes of exposure are breathing (inhalation), eating or drinking (ingestion), or contact with the skin (dermal contact).

6. Ways an agent enters a target after contact (e.g., by ingestion, inhalation, or dermal absorption). [EPA Exposure Factors Handbook: Glossary] [IPCS 2004]

7. The way a chemical enters an organism after contact (e.g., by ingestion, inhalation, dermal absorption). [EPA 1997a, EPA 2004, EPA 2005b][Thesaurus of Terms Used in Microbial Risk Assessment]

8. The pathway (e.g., ingestion, inhalation, dermal) or vehicle by which a pathogen comes into contact with a host organism (e.g., food, soil, fomites, water). [ILSI 2000]

9. The way that a contaminant enters an individual or population after contact. [IPCS Risk Assessment Terminology (https://www.who.int/ipcs/methods/harmonization/areas/ipcsterminologyparts1and2.pdf)]
