Umbilical vein
Term · Chemistry · MLC-T-CHM-012409
A single vein present in the fetus that carries oxygenated, nutrient-rich blood from the placenta to the fetal circulation. This vein travels through the umbilical cord and delivers blood to the fetal liver and then to the inferior vena cava. After birth, the umbilical vein obliterates and becomes the ligamentum teres hepatis.
