Placental circulation

Term · Chemistry · MLC-T-CHM-008990

The blood flow through the placenta, made up of two separate circuits that exchange substances without mixing the maternal and fetal blood. In the maternal uteroplacental circuit, blood from spiral arteries enters the intervillous space and bathes the chorionic villi, while in the fetal fetoplacental circuit deoxygenated blood runs along the umbilical arteries to villous capillaries and returns oxygenated through the umbilical vein. Normally the umbilical cord carries two arteries and one vein.
