Syncytiotrophoblast
Term · Chemistry · MLC-T-CHM-011753
A continuous, multinucleated layer of epithelial cells covering the surface of the placental villi that forms the primary interface between maternal and fetal circulation. It arises from the fusion of underlying cytotrophoblast cells and is directly involved in nutrient exchange, gas exchange, and waste transport. This layer is also the primary site of synthesis for human chorionic gonadotropin (hCG) and other pregnancy-related hormones.
