Chorionic gonadotropin

A glycoprotein hormone produced by the trophoblast cells of the placenta during pregnancy, which maintains the corpus luteum and its production of progesterone. This hormone is detectable in the blood and urine shortly after conception. Human chorionic gonadotropin (hCG) is the hormone detected by most pregnancy tests.
