Chorionic villus
Term · Chemistry · MLC-T-CHM-002032
Finger-like projections that extend from the chorion into the maternal decidua, forming the fetal component of the placenta. These villi increase the surface area for efficient exchange of nutrients, gases, and waste products between the maternal and fetal bloodstreams. Chorionic villus sampling (CVS) is a diagnostic procedure that involves obtaining cells from these villi.
