Blood-placenta barrier

A biological interface between the maternal and fetal circulatory systems within the placenta. This barrier regulates the exchange of nutrients, gases, and waste products while restricting the passage of harmful substances and some maternal immune cells. It is composed of several layers, including syncytiotrophoblasts and fetal endothelial cells.
