Placental barrier

Term · Chemistry · MLC-T-CHM-008989

The physiological interface within the placenta that regulates the passage of substances between the maternal and fetal circulations. This barrier is composed of several layers of cells, including syncytiotrophoblasts and cytotrophoblasts, which control the transport of nutrients, gases, and waste. While it protects the fetus from many harmful agents, some xenobiotics and pathogens can still cross this barrier.
