Blood-brain barrier
Term · Chemistry · MLC-T-CHM-001390
A highly selective physiological barrier formed by endothelial cells lining the capillaries of the central nervous system. This barrier restricts the passage of substances from the bloodstream into the brain tissue, protecting the brain from circulating toxins and pathogens. It is characterized by tight junctions between endothelial cells and a surrounding layer of astrocytes.
