Astrocyte
Term · Chemistry · MLC-T-CHM-012897
A star-shaped glial cell found in the brain and spinal cord, making up a large proportion of the cells in the central nervous system. Astrocytes perform many functions, including providing structural support to neurons, regulating the chemical environment of the extracellular space, and contributing to the blood-brain barrier. Following injury or disease, they undergo a process called astrogliosis, which involves changes in gene expression and morphology.
