Astringent

A chemical substance that causes the constriction or shrinkage of body tissues, particularly mucous membranes or skin, and reduces secretions. These substances work by precipitating proteins on the surface of cells, forming a protective layer. Common examples include tannins found in unripe fruit, alum, and certain metallic salts like zinc sulfate, which are used in lotions and styptic pencils.
