Keratinocyte
Term · Chemistry · MLC-T-CHM-006315
The predominant cell type forming the epidermis, the skin's outermost layer. These cells originate in the deepest basal layer of the epidermis and migrate upwards, undergoing differentiation and eventually forming a protective layer of dead, flattened cells at the surface. Keratinocytes are responsible for producing keratin, a fibrous structural protein that provides strength and waterproofing to the skin, hair, and nails.
