Keratin

A family of fibrous structural proteins that are the main component of hair, nails, skin, and the outer layer of the epidermis in vertebrates. These proteins provide strength and protection to epithelial tissues. Keratins are classified as either alpha-keratins, found in mammals, or beta-keratins, found in reptiles and birds.
