Keratinization

Term · Chemistry · MLC-T-CHM-006314

The process by which epithelial cells, particularly in the skin, produce and accumulate keratin, a fibrous structural protein. This leads to the formation of a tough, protective outer layer that is resistant to physical, chemical, and microbial damage. The stratum corneum of the epidermis is composed of keratinized cells.
