Amyloid
Term · Chemistry · MLC-T-CHM-000529
An insoluble fibrous protein aggregate that can accumulate abnormally in tissues and organs, a condition known as amyloidosis. These proteins misfold into a characteristic cross-beta sheet conformation, making them resistant to normal cellular clearance mechanisms. The presence of amyloid deposits is a pathological hallmark of several neurodegenerative conditions, including Alzheimer's disease, where the primary component is amyloid-beta peptide.
