Neurofibrillary tangle
Term · Chemistry · MLC-T-CHM-007872
An intracellular aggregate of hyperphosphorylated tau protein that accumulates inside neurons in certain neurodegenerative disorders. These tangles are composed of paired helical filaments and straight filaments, which disrupt the neuron's internal transport system and contribute to cell death. The density of neurofibrillary tangles in the cerebral cortex is a primary pathological hallmark used in the diagnosis of Alzheimer disease.
