Primary lamellae

The gill filaments of a fish, the structures that project outward from each branchial arch and carry the respiratory surface. Each filament bears rows of thin plate-like secondary lamellae, where gas exchange between water and blood takes place. Each teleost gill arch carries two rows of these filaments.
