Secondary lamellae

Term · Chemistry · MLC-T-CHM-010617

Thin, plate-like structures that project from the primary lamellae of fish gills, forming the primary sites of gas exchange between the water and the blood. These structures are highly vascularized and possess a very thin epithelial layer, maximizing the efficiency of oxygen uptake and carbon dioxide release. Their delicate nature makes them susceptible to damage from waterborne pollutants.
