Alveolus

Term · Chemistry · MLC-T-CHM-000463

A small, cup-shaped air sac in the lungs, forming the primary site of gas exchange between the air and the blood. The walls of the alveoli are extremely thin, allowing for efficient diffusion of oxygen into the bloodstream and carbon dioxide out. An adult human lung contains hundreds of millions of alveoli.
