Ventilation

Term · Chemistry · MLC-T-CHM-012540

The process of moving air into and out of the lungs to facilitate gas exchange with the internal environment, primarily to bring in oxygen and flush out carbon dioxide. This mechanical process involves the contraction and relaxation of the diaphragm and intercostal muscles. In toxicology, ventilation rate, measured in liters per minute, is a parameter for assessing the uptake of airborne toxicants and for calculating exposure doses.
