Ventilation

Term · Meteorology and atmospheric science · MLC-T-MET-009983

The process by which air is exchanged and mixed within a specific volume of the atmosphere, such as a valley or an urban air shed. It involves both horizontal transport by wind and vertical mixing due to turbulence and convection, which disperse heat, moisture, and pollutants. The ventilation index, a product of the mixing height and the average wind speed within the mixed layer, is used to forecast air pollution potential.
