Ventilated thermocline

Term · Meteorology and atmospheric science · MLC-T-MET-009982

A region of the permanent thermocline that is directly connected to the surface mixed layer along lines of constant density, called isopycnals. Water properties from the surface, such as temperature, salinity, and dissolved gases, are carried into the ocean interior through this subduction process. This ventilation is driven by wind-induced convergence and Ekman pumping, which forces surface water downward, primarily in subtropical gyres.
