Barrier layer
Term · Meteorology and atmospheric science · MLC-T-MET-003838
A layer in the upper ocean where the mixed layer, characterized by uniform temperature, is deeper than the isothermal layer, which has uniform salinity. This creates a stable stratification below the mixed layer due to salinity differences, even if temperature is uniform. Barrier layers inhibit vertical mixing of heat from the surface, influencing sea surface temperature and tropical cyclone intensification.
