Epilimnion
Term · Meteorology and atmospheric science · MLC-T-MET-005399
The uppermost, warmest, and most oxygenated layer of water in a thermally stratified lake during summer. This layer is actively mixed by wind and solar radiation, leading to relatively uniform temperature and dissolved gas concentrations. It sits above the metalimnion and hypolimnion, which are cooler and less mixed.
