Hypolimnion
Term · Meteorology and atmospheric science · MLC-T-MET-006386
The bottom, dense, and cool region of a thermally stratified body of water, located below the thermocline. This layer is isolated from the upper waters and experiences minimal mixing and light penetration. The hypolimnion remains at a relatively constant temperature throughout the year, which in temperate freshwater lakes is approximately 4°C, the temperature of maximum water density.
