Pycnocline

Term · Meteorology and atmospheric science · MLC-T-MET-008216

A layer in a body of water where the density gradient is greatest, meaning density changes rapidly with depth. This layer acts as a barrier to vertical mixing, separating less dense surface waters from denser deep waters. In the ocean, it is often associated with the thermocline and halocline, influencing nutrient distribution and marine ecosystems.
