Halocline

Term · Meteorology and atmospheric science · MLC-T-MET-006161

A distinct vertical gradient in ocean salinity, where salinity changes rapidly with depth. This layer acts as a barrier to vertical mixing, influencing ocean stratification and circulation patterns. Haloclines are particularly pronounced in regions where freshwater input, such as from rivers or melting ice, meets saline ocean water, or in areas of high evaporation.
