Arctic Surface Water

Term · Meteorology and atmospheric science · MLC-T-MET-010379

The cold, low-salinity layer of water occupying the upper 50 meters of the Arctic Ocean. Its properties are shaped by freshwater input from rivers and melting ice, keeping its temperature near the freezing point of seawater, approximately -1.8°C. This layer is separated from the warmer, saltier Atlantic Water below by a strong halocline, which restricts vertical mixing and heat exchange with the atmosphere.
